Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) - a cardiac protector!

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) improves functional parameters of heart failure, reduces complications such as cardiac arrhythmias, and does not produce side effects.

Heart failure – the heart's inability to pump enough blood to meet the body's needs – is a growing epidemic worldwide.

Coronary artery disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, excess weight, and heart attacks increase the risk of heart failure.

A natural approach is now available for those with or at high risk of heart failure.

Coenzyme Q10 is the only endogenously synthesized lipid with a redox function that exhibits wide tissue and intracellular distribution in mammals. Beneficial effects of Coenzyme Q10 supplementation have been observed in various age-related diseases, including heart failure. The level of CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) decreases significantly in patients with this disease, which correlates with the severity of clinical symptoms.

Supplementation with various pharmaceutical formulations of CoQ10 improves impaired cardiac function and the clinical course of heart failure. Current clinical trial data indicate that CoQ10 can significantly reduce the morbidity and mortality of patients with heart failure, in addition to pharmacotherapy recommended by guidelines.

Adequate CoQ10 supplementation has been shown to improve functional parameters of heart failure, reduce complications such as cardiac arrhythmias, and produce no significant side effects.

CoQ10 can improve the contractility (compression) exerted by the heart in patients with mild to moderate heart failure (those in NYHA Classes II and III). This was demonstrated in a study using a daily dose of 300 mg for only four weeks, compared to placebo.

Supplementation not only increased serum CoQ10 levels by a factor of three but also improved the measure of heart wall thickening during contraction by up to 15.6%.

The amount of blood pumped out of the heart with each beat increased by 15% in supplemented individuals, accompanied by a 21% decrease in end-systolic volume. These are favorable measures of the heart's overall efficiency in pumping blood to the body.

No side effects were observed in this study, nor in a follow-up study of similar design.

In the follow-up study, in addition to improvements in contractility (compression) and pumping capacity, CoQ10 supplementation at the same dose improved endothelial function, which is an essential measure of the health of the delicate lining of the arteries.
