Thousands of published scientific articles highlight the benefits of vitamin D. Everyone knows it's good for you, but what can happen in case of a deficiency of this vitamin? Various pathologies and clinical conditions can be prevented if physiological vitamin D levels are adequate. A connection has been established between cholecalciferol (vitamin D3) and an increased probability of conditions related to cellular health. Some key areas of its action are highlighted below:
Vitamin D is necessary for adequate calcium absorption in the small intestine, as well as its metabolization. Calcium can then be absorbed via the bloodstream and deposited in the bones to strengthen them. Without vitamin D, calcium absorption is poor (less than 30% of dietary calcium), compromising the bone remodeling process – there is insufficient production of bone tissue to replace what has been reabsorbed. Vitamin D3 became famous for preventing rickets in children, but with an aging population, it is now more widely used in the prevention of osteoporosis and bone fractures, not only by making bones stronger but also by acting on the brain, improving motor coordination.
Blood vessels have vitamin D receptors, and the active form accentuates cardiac muscle contraction and improves the function of vascular smooth muscle. When this vitamin is active, it alters anti-inflammatory activity, which is an important factor in the development of atherosclerosis.
Furthermore, there is evidence that vitamin D influences the renal production of renin, the main hormone regulating blood pressure. Vitamin D is so important for cardiovascular health, and its absence is related to a 60% increased risk of heart failure, heart attack, and strokes.
Preeclampsia, a potentially serious complication in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. One study investigated 25 (OH) D levels in early pregnancy and the risk of preeclampsia, as well as the 25 (OH) D level in newborns of mothers with preeclampsia. In women who developed preeclampsia, 25 (OH) D levels were lower in early pregnancy compared to controls (18.2 ng/mL versus 21.3 ng/mL). Researchers found a five-fold increase in the likelihood of preeclampsia (95% CI: 1.7-14.1) for patients with 25 (OH) D levels <15 ng/mL at less than 22 weeks of gestation.
Physiological vitamin D levels may be associated with longevity, according to research conducted at Leiden University Medical Center, Netherlands, based on data from the Canadian Medical Association Journal. A study evaluated serum vitamin D concentrations and telomere length (a longevity index) in 2,160 women aged between 18 and 79 years.
It was found that higher vitamin D levels can alter the length of leukocyte telomeres, which highlights the potentially beneficial effects of this hormone on aging and age-related diseases.
